Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges

An RTJ face uses a machined groove and a matching metal ring gasket. Ring and groove designations must be specified as a system, not chosen by nominal pipe size alone.

Groove and ring identity

Identify the required groove dimensions and gasket designation from the governing flange and gasket specifications. Different ring-joint systems are not automatically interchangeable. A ring that appears to fit is not evidence of correct sealing contact or permitted deformation.

Material and surface condition

Specify gasket material and any hardness relationship or other requirements under the approved joint design. Groove finish, damage and cleanliness matter to sealing performance. Inspection criteria should be stated explicitly rather than relying on a general polished-metal description.

Standard-specific assembly

RTJ arrangements occur in more than one equipment and flange system. ASME and API references need their own applicable connection and gasket requirements. Follow the approved installation and replacement procedure; the schematic is not an assembly instruction or a reusable-gasket recommendation.

Selection reference only. Offered scope, technical compliance and availability are confirmed against the complete project enquiry.

Mating face and gasket requirements

For Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges, face geometry, gasket selection and assembly loading must be reviewed together. Confirm the complete mating pair before ordering.

Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges: mating face and gasket requirements
Parameter / designationTechnical informationSelection requirement
Groove designationSpecify groove geometry and ring designation under the applicable flange/gasket standards. An RTJ label alone does not identify a matching ring.
Ring materialIdentify material, hardness requirements and compatibility with the process.Review the ring and groove materials together.
Groove conditionInspect seating surfaces and dimensions against the acceptance criteria.Damage, corrosion or unsuitable machining can prevent correct sealing.
Joint assemblyUse the approved alignment and tightening procedure for the selected metal ring.Do not interchange ring profiles based only on nominal size.

Compare related options

Compare Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges with the related forms or references below. A related product is not necessarily a permissible substitute.

Related product / referenceDistinctionCheck before selection
Raised Face (RF) FlangesA raised face provides a gasket seating surface inside the bolt circle. Specify the face dimensions, finish and gasket as a coordinated joint requirement.RF dimensions under the exact flange standard and designation
Flat Face (FF) FlangesA flat face has no raised gasket seating step. Confirm the gasket coverage, mating flange material and joint loading rather than identifying it only by appearance.Type, construction, material and applicable standard
Tongue and Groove FlangesA tongue-and-groove joint pairs a projecting tongue with a matching groove. The two faces and the confined gasket dimensions must be specified together.Tongue side, groove side or complete mating set
Male and Female FlangesA projecting male face mates with a recessed female face. Specify the full seating geometry and gasket requirements rather than substituting tongue-and-groove terminology.Male, female or matched pair
Lap Joint AssemblyIn a lap-joint assembly, the stub end provides the gasket seating surface. The separate backing flange transfers bolt load and can rotate for alignment before tightening.Backing flange and stub-end designations separately

Inspection, documents and delivery

Define acceptance requirements for Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges in the purchase order. Required examinations and documents depend on the material, design and project specification.

Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges: inspection, documents and delivery
Review stageInformation to confirmOrder requirement
Material identity and traceabilitySpecification, grade, heat/lot identification and the required material certificate.Agree documentation and marking before manufacture; visual appearance cannot verify alloy identity.
Dimensional verificationSeating diameter, face profile, recess/projection and mating clearances.Identify inspection points, tolerances, units and drawing revision.
Surface and end conditionGasket-contact surface, attachment end, edges and any coating exclusions.State finish and visual acceptance criteria; agree protection of machined surfaces.
Supplementary examinationsAny specified PMI, NDE, hardness, impact, corrosion or other tests.Define the method, sampling and acceptance criteria; tests are not automatically included.
Assembly compatibilityGasket dimensions/material, mating flange and bolting procedure.Design approval and correct assembly remain separate from a dimensional inspection report.
Packing and order releaseQuantity, identification, surface protection, documents and delivery destination.Agree preservation, packaging and release requirements with the order.
