Lap Joint Assembly
In a lap-joint assembly, the stub end provides the gasket seating surface. The separate backing flange transfers bolt load and can rotate for alignment before tightening.
Separate the component roles
The backing flange and stub end are distinct components. The backing flange does not normally form the process-wetted gasket seat. Specify the material and dimensions of each part rather than assigning the stub-end material to the complete assembly by default.
Fit between the lap and backing flange
The stub-end lap thickness, outside diameter and corner geometry must suit the backing flange. Bore clearance and the seating contact need to be checked as an assembly. A generic loose-ring photograph cannot establish compatibility with a particular stub end.
Gasket and mating joint
The gasket specification follows the stub-end seating surface and mating connection. Include pipe wall thickness, weld preparation and the required finish on the lap face. Rotation assists alignment during assembly; it is not a swivel-joint function for an operating pipeline.
