Facing reference

Male and Female Flanges

A projecting male face mates with a recessed female face. Specify the full seating geometry and gasket requirements rather than substituting tongue-and-groove terminology.

Projecting and recessed faces

The male projection and female recess form a matched pair with defined seating diameters and depths. The facing name alone does not resolve the dimensions or identify the governing standard. Record the exact designation or approved equipment drawing.

Joint clearance and gasket

The gasket and mating clearances must be compatible with the intended compression and bolt loading. Confirm which dimensions apply to the gasket seat and which establish location or clearance. A visual match of two recesses is not a dimensional acceptance check.

Replacement control

Identify whether the enquiry is for the male half, female half or both components. Include the mating-flange details and any known modifications. Do not pair parts from different standards on the basis of the same nominal size without a complete interface review.

Selection reference only. Offered scope, technical compliance and availability are confirmed against the complete project enquiry.

Mating face and gasket requirements

For Male and Female Flanges, face geometry, gasket selection and assembly loading must be reviewed together. Confirm the complete mating pair before ordering.

Male and Female Flanges: mating face and gasket requirements
Parameter / designationTechnical informationSelection requirement
Male faceDefine the projecting seating area and its diameter.Identify the projecting side on the assembly drawing.
Female faceDefine the mating recess and seating depth.Check projection/recess fit against the specified gasket.
Gasket confinementSpecify material and dimensions for the actual recess.Male/female and tongue/groove terminology do not describe interchangeable geometry.
Assembly fitReview concentricity, clearance and surface condition.Use the approved bolting and gasket-compression procedure.

Compare related options

Compare Male and Female Flanges with the related forms or references below. A related product is not necessarily a permissible substitute.

Male and Female Flanges: compare related options
Related product / referenceDistinctionCheck before selection
Raised Face (RF) FlangesA raised face provides a gasket seating surface inside the bolt circle. Specify the face dimensions, finish and gasket as a coordinated joint requirement.RF dimensions under the exact flange standard and designation
Flat Face (FF) FlangesA flat face has no raised gasket seating step. Confirm the gasket coverage, mating flange material and joint loading rather than identifying it only by appearance.Type, construction, material and applicable standard
Ring Type Joint (RTJ) FlangesAn RTJ face uses a machined groove and a matching metal ring gasket. Ring and groove designations must be specified as a system, not chosen by nominal pipe size alone.Flange standard, connection designation and groove details
Tongue and Groove FlangesA tongue-and-groove joint pairs a projecting tongue with a matching groove. The two faces and the confined gasket dimensions must be specified together.Tongue side, groove side or complete mating set
Lap Joint AssemblyIn a lap-joint assembly, the stub end provides the gasket seating surface. The separate backing flange transfers bolt load and can rotate for alignment before tightening.Backing flange and stub-end designations separately

Inspection, documents and delivery

Define acceptance requirements for Male and Female Flanges in the purchase order. Required examinations and documents depend on the material, design and project specification.

Male and Female Flanges: inspection, documents and delivery
Review stageInformation to confirmOrder requirement
Material identity and traceabilitySpecification, grade, heat/lot identification and the required material certificate.Agree documentation and marking before manufacture; visual appearance cannot verify alloy identity.
Dimensional verificationSeating diameter, face profile, recess/projection and mating clearances.Identify inspection points, tolerances, units and drawing revision.
Surface and end conditionGasket-contact surface, attachment end, edges and any coating exclusions.State finish and visual acceptance criteria; agree protection of machined surfaces.
Supplementary examinationsAny specified PMI, NDE, hardness, impact, corrosion or other tests.Define the method, sampling and acceptance criteria; tests are not automatically included.
Assembly compatibilityGasket dimensions/material, mating flange and bolting procedure.Design approval and correct assembly remain separate from a dimensional inspection report.
Packing and order releaseQuantity, identification, surface protection, documents and delivery destination.Agree preservation, packaging and release requirements with the order.
