Material selection

Carbon Steel Flanges

Define carbon steel flanges by product specification, temperature range and joint design. Carbon steel is a material family, not a pressure rating.

Forging specification and temperature

An ASTM A105 designation and a low-temperature forging specification such as ASTM A350 describe different requirements. Do not substitute one based only on appearance or nominal strength. The design minimum temperature, thickness and applicable code determine whether impact testing and a particular grade or class are required.

Corrosion and protection

Review fluid chemistry, corrosion allowance and the external environment before selecting a protection system. Paint, galvanizing or other coatings do not automatically protect process-wetted surfaces. Coating thickness and masking requirements must not interfere with gasket seating, threads or bolt fit.

Welding and traceability

Identify the mating pipe material, weld preparation and heat-treatment requirements. Specify the material certificate and marking needed to preserve traceability through machining and any coating operation. Dimensional inspection alone cannot establish the ordered material grade.

Selection reference only. Offered scope, technical compliance and availability are confirmed against the complete project enquiry.

Material designations and distinctions

Reference designations for Carbon Steel Flanges. These are not an availability list or an equivalence table. A trade name, UNS number and ASTM product specification have different roles.

Carbon Steel Flanges: material designations and distinctions
Parameter / designationTechnical informationSelection requirement
ASTM A105Carbon-steel forging specificationConfirm the product specification, grade/condition, design suitability and required material records.
ASTM A350 LF2Low-temperature forging grade; specify the required classConfirm the product specification, grade/condition, design suitability and required material records.

Compare related options

Compare Carbon Steel Flanges with the related forms or references below. A related product is not necessarily a permissible substitute.

Alloy / Chrome Moly Steel FlangesChrome-moly flange enquiries require the exact alloy grade and heat-treatment condition, especially where elevated temperature and welding govern the design.Complete specification and chrome-moly grade
Stainless Steel FlangesSpecify stainless steel flanges by grade, product specification and service conditions, not by a bright surface finish or the general name stainless steel.Material specification, grade and any low-carbon or stabilised variant
Flange Pressure RatingsA flange class, PN designation or table is not a universal allowable pressure. The design must use the specified standard, material and temperature together.Exact edition and flange/rating designation

Inspection, documents and delivery

Define acceptance requirements for Carbon Steel Flanges in the purchase order. Required examinations and documents depend on the material, design and project specification.

Carbon Steel Flanges: inspection, documents and delivery
Review stageInformation to confirmOrder requirement
Material identity and traceabilitySpecification, grade, heat/lot identification and the required material certificate.Agree documentation and marking before manufacture; visual appearance cannot verify alloy identity.
Dimensional verificationThe selected flange form, bore, thickness, bolt pattern and mating geometry.Identify inspection points, tolerances, units and drawing revision.
Surface and end conditionGasket-contact surface, attachment end, edges and any coating exclusions.State finish and visual acceptance criteria; agree protection of machined surfaces.
Supplementary examinationsAny specified PMI, NDE, hardness, impact, corrosion or other tests.Define the method, sampling and acceptance criteria; tests are not automatically included.
Assembly compatibilityAdjoining components, weld or mechanical interface and project service conditions.Design approval and correct assembly remain separate from a dimensional inspection report.
Packing and order releaseQuantity, identification, surface protection, documents and delivery destination.Agree preservation, packaging and release requirements with the order.
