Flange selection guide

Flange Material Selection

Choose a flange material from the service and fabrication requirements, then define the exact grade and product specification. A photograph or broad alloy family cannot establish suitability.

Describe the service before choosing a grade

Provide fluid composition, concentration, contaminants, temperature range and pressure. Include external exposure, cleaning chemicals, startup and shutdown conditions. Corrosion mechanisms, low-temperature toughness and high-temperature performance require different checks; there is no single best material for every flange connection.

Identify every component in the joint

Distinguish the flange, pipe, stub end, gasket and bolting materials. In a lap-joint arrangement the backing flange may not be process-wetted, while the stub end is. Review dissimilar-material contacts and welding compatibility. A corrosion-resistant flange alone does not establish the durability of the complete joint.

Define product form and material condition

State the applicable forging, plate or other product specification with the exact grade and required heat treatment or temper. Alloy composition, product form and condition are separate procurement details. A similar commercial name or chemical composition does not justify an unapproved substitution.

Agree evidence and acceptance requirements

Specify traceability, material documentation and any additional testing with named acceptance criteria. Positive material identification, mechanical tests and corrosion tests answer different questions and do not replace one another. Confirm offered scope and technical suitability before releasing an order.

Selection reference only. Offered scope, technical compliance and availability are confirmed against the complete project enquiry.

Dimensions and connection data

Define Flange Material Selection as part of the complete joint. These fields identify required engineering data; they are not universal dimensions or a declaration of available sizes.

Flange Material Selection: dimensions and connection data
Parameter / designationTechnical informationSelection requirement
Nominal size and boreState the nominal connection size separately from the actual bore or pipe outside diameter.A matching size label does not establish matching internal geometry.
Outside diameter and thicknessIdentify the finished flange diameter, minimum thickness and any hub or collar projection.Include the drawing datum and units for replacement measurements.
Bolt circle and holesRecord pitch-circle diameter, hole quantity, hole diameter and any special orientation.Check against the mating flange; do not infer a bolt pattern from pressure class alone.
Gasket-contact surfacesSpecify face form, seating dimensions and surface finish on the assembled joint.Include gasket designation; a visually similar surface is not evidence of compatibility.
Pipe-side interfaceIdentify weld preparation, socket, thread, collar or other attachment geometry as applicable.Provide pipe schedule/wall thickness and the connection-specific standard.
Design conditionsState design pressure, minimum/maximum temperature, fluid and mechanical loads.Pressure class is not a pressure value in bar or psi. Use the material-specific rating basis.

Compare related options

Compare Flange Material Selection with the related forms or references below. A related product is not necessarily a permissible substitute.

Flange Material Selection: compare related options
Related product / referenceDistinctionCheck before selection
Carbon Steel FlangesDefine carbon steel flanges by product specification, temperature range and joint design. Carbon steel is a material family, not a pressure rating.Forging or plate specification, grade and heat treatment
Stainless Steel FlangesSpecify stainless steel flanges by grade, product specification and service conditions, not by a bright surface finish or the general name stainless steel.Material specification, grade and any low-carbon or stabilised variant
Duplex Steel FlangesDuplex flange selection combines corrosion resistance with a controlled two-phase microstructure. Identify the exact grade rather than requesting duplex alone.UNS designation and applicable product specification
Nickel FlangesCommercially pure nickel flanges are a different enquiry from nickel-alloy flanges. Specify the grade and service chemistry without relying on the word nickel alone.Nickel grade and product specification
Flange Pressure RatingsA flange class, PN designation or table is not a universal allowable pressure. The design must use the specified standard, material and temperature together.Exact edition and flange/rating designation

Inspection, documents and delivery

Define acceptance requirements for Flange Material Selection in the purchase order. Required examinations and documents depend on the material, design and project specification.

Flange Material Selection: inspection, documents and delivery
Review stageInformation to confirmOrder requirement
Material identity and traceabilitySpecification, grade, heat/lot identification and the required material certificate.Agree documentation and marking before manufacture; visual appearance cannot verify alloy identity.
Dimensional verificationCritical dimensions from the selected standard or controlled drawing.Identify inspection points, tolerances, units and drawing revision.
Surface and end conditionGasket-contact surface, attachment end, edges and any coating exclusions.State finish and visual acceptance criteria; agree protection of machined surfaces.
Supplementary examinationsAny specified PMI, NDE, hardness, impact, corrosion or other tests.Define the method, sampling and acceptance criteria; tests are not automatically included.
Assembly compatibilityAdjoining components, weld or mechanical interface and project service conditions.Design approval and correct assembly remain separate from a dimensional inspection report.
Packing and order releaseQuantity, identification, surface protection, documents and delivery destination.Agree preservation, packaging and release requirements with the order.
